Good Books thread
Hey guys get your hands on a copy of The testament of Gideon mack its absolutely brilliant based near Dundee I believe. About a minister who does not believe in god has a fling with his wifes best friend and meets the devil. So well written and thought provoking.

Re: Good Books thread
While in Scotland I bought "The Auld Scots Dictionary" by Chris MacKay
Its a concise history of Scottish words and their meaning and origins

I love the book The Summer Walkers, by Timothy Neat. It is the book that inspired Calum Macdonald to write the song of the same name and it is the history of the travelling people and pearl fishers of the old Highland days. I love all the Inspector Rebus books by Iain Rankin and another cracking thriller writer is Lee Weeks, who I think is from Devon.
The Stornoway Way is another fantastic read, it's the Trainspotting of the Western Isles.

Re: Good Books thread
Have to agree Tiz, 'The Testament of Gideon Mack' is a brilliant book and set where I grew up. A really clever book in the way it is written. Loved it!
Now reading another of Stuart Macbride's murder/crime novels set in Aberdeen. This one is 'Blind Eye'. If you like the Rebus stuff you'll love Macbride but start with the first one 'Cold Granite' and work your way through.

Now reading Midwinter by John Buchan its superb its Highland meets the Cotswolds its the Jacobite epic and its amazing the book completes for me two cherished places and peoples. And it stirs me like I was there back in the 45. Brilliant story.
Midwinter it would seem was a fellow west countryman with a love of Scotland andits music. Its spooky what this book does to me. It really is like I was there all those years ago.

Yep it was a great read and would thoroughly reccomend it. It makes you think which I like and had an intresting story. The only bit I struggled on was the section written in old Scots which I just had to take my time reading. Is there actually an truth in the place and the Black jaws.
My verdict was Gideon was mad. Well he was scottish and the funniest bit was the fact that the devil loves Scotland so much........

Tiz, although Monimasket is fictional all the other places are obviously real (Dundee, Montrose, Forfar etc). As that area is home it makes me think of places like the Den Of Airlie with the river Isla running through it. I always knew Angus was the home of the devil!!!!

Tiz, and everybody else - if you haven't yet got round to reading Stieg Larrson's Millennium trilogy, I heartily recommend it. You start with "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" and then proceed through the two subsequent books, each of which is longer and, IMO, even better than the one before.

Excellent both of them, and quite frightening when, remembering how long ago they were written, you see how much of what they portray beginning to come true. Orwell wrote most of "1984" in an isolated and run-down farmhouse on the island of Jura - see [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]tiz wrote:Just got me mitts on

As for "Brave New World", I regret that ever since first reading it several decades ago I have been in the habit of referring to young women of a certain build as "pneumatic".....

Just finished 'Something Wicked This Way Comes' by Ray Bradbury. A carnival comes to town and two young boys are drawn to it. All is not as it seems... Really enjoyed it.

Re: Good Books thread
I'm just on page 1037 of Die Tore der Welt (World without end) by Ken Follett, the sequel of Die Säulen der Erde (The Pillars of the earth). I do like historical novels and World without end is such a good sequel of a masterpiece. Hopefully I will finish it till the end of this year (still 300 pages and I'm a very slow reader...). In these days a filmteam started a film adaption, it will be released next year.
